Gray, Eileen

Eileen Gray (1878-1976) war eine irische Innenarchitektin und Möbeldesignerin. Sie gehört zu den wichtigsten Designerinnen des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts.

Zu ihren populärsten Entwürfen gehört "E 1027", ein Beistelltisch welcher 1987 in die Sammlung des Museum of Modern Art aufgenommen wurde.

Grays Arbeit ist vergleichbar mit anderen modernen Designern wie Le Corbusier und Mies van der Rohe und ihre Entwürfe sind von Sammlern und Möbel-Enthusiasten auf der ganzen Welt hochbegehrt.

Als jüngstes Kind der wohlhabenden Familie Gray studierte Eileen Gray Malerei an der renommierten Slade School of Fine Art of University College London in Bloomsbury. Doch als ihr Vater 1900 starb wechselte Gray an die Ecole Colarossi und die Academie Julian in Paris. Gray ging schließlich 1905 zurück nach London wo sie die Kunst des Lackierens vom Japaner Seizo Sugawara lernte.
